Tulku Orgyen P'huntsok on Khandro Thukthik Practice & about the upcoming Retreat weekend:

"For Vajrayana practitioners, the Three Roots -- Guru, Yidam Deity, and Dakini -- are the main focus of practice, whether in a long-time three year retreat, or in daily practice.  The main Dakini practice in the Dudjom Tersar lineage is Khandro Thukthik, which means "Dakini Heart Essence."  In this practice, we visualize ourselves as the wisdom dakini Yeshe Tsogyal, the one who embodies all enlightened qualities.  With profound merit and blessings, the very primordial blissful state of the mind's true nature is realized as the Dakini herself.

My previous incarnation, Togden Kunzang Longdrol, cherished Khandro Thukthik as one of his main Dakini practices, and it was upon his request that His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche wrote the dedication prayer for this Yeshe Tsogyal sadhana that we are practicing this weekend. I first received teachings on and empowerment for Khandro Thukthik at an eary age from my first root guru, Tulku Dawa Rinpoche, and I practiced Khandro Thukthik in retreat, including the five hundred thousand accumulation of its ngondro practice.  For this and many other reasons, I have a close connection with this practice, and to this day, Khandro Thukthik remains a very important practice for me.

Under Bhakha Rinpohce's guidance, I led Khandro Thukthik practice in 2001 at Stanley and Shirley Giser's house during my first visit to the retreat land.  Many years have passed since then, and now -- again on Rinpoche's recommendation -- I will lead the profound Dakini practice on this retreat land, which as you know Rinpoche named Osel Khandro Duwi Ling, the Gathering Place of the Dakinis.  May all beings benefit."

Work-Study & Volunteers:

There are work-study opportunities for the positions that are available to help offset the cost of the retreat, including kitchen and service duties, pre-retreat and post-retreat work. Such positions offer a discount of half the regular retreat fee but there are ways to schedule to work and receive greater reductions at $10 an hour. You may work to offset your retreat costs only up to a point, you must pay for food for each retreat: $3 for breakfast, $5 lunch and $5 for dinner.

ADVANCED SCHEDULING FOR WORK-EXCHANGE IS REQUIRED, CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Meals:

Healthy, delicious meals will be prepared in the sangha kitchen and served in the dining tent.  Meal service will include dinner on Friday evening at 6 p.m., and a full breakfast on Monday morning at 8:30 a.m.  Tea and coffee will also be available at any time throughout the weekend in the dining tent and there are several potable freshwater taps for drinking water.  If you have special dietary requirements, please contact our Summer Chef, Matje Smith. If we can't accommodate you, or if you have serious health concerns or allergies, you should consider bringing your own food.  The kitchen will not be available for any personal cooking needs and participants are prohibited from keeping food in their tents due to concerns about wildlife.

Texts & Meditation Supplies:

There will copies of the Khandro Thukthik Sadhana of the Dudjom Tersar Lineage that practitioners may borrow, and which should be returned at the end of the retreat. There are cushions available in the stupa, but you may wish to bring your own.

Karma Yoga:

Doing work in service to the Three Jewels is very meritorious, and offers us a rich opportunity to practice outside the shrine room. Everyone at the retreat land who does not already have a work-study job contributes to the retreat's operations in this way and will be assigned a chore and given instructions according to their physical capacity at registration.  The retreat schedule for these chores along with the on-duty participant's name will be posted outside the kitchen.

Accommodations:

The retreat land offers camping only, either in your tent or in your vehicle. Please plan to bring camping gear, including a flashlight and prepare for a range of temperatures and precipitation. VFNM has one large (8x14') canvas tent with a natural floor already set up for the season for rent to couple or a family, inquire here for details. There are hot showers, flush toilets, an outdoor sink, and outhouses. If you prefer to stay in a motel, there are many choices in the town of Grants, twenty miles away (a forty-minute drive on a gravel road). Or, you may wish to reserve a room nearby in at the Shirley & Stanley Giser's private residence or cabin near the stupa and also that of neighbors Jillian Harriman & Kent Ferguson. There is also a local bed-and-breakfast, the Cimarron Rose: 505-783-4770, located a short distance from the retreat land.
