Visiting the Retreat Land

The Zuni Mountain Stupa and the land also known as Ösel Khandro Duwi Ling, the Gathering Place of the Dakinis, is located approximately twenty miles south of Grants, New Mexico, in the Zuni Mountains. This small, simple, and remote retreat center of Bhakha Tulku Rinpoche is at an altitude of just under 8,000 feet. It is situated in a grassy meadow surrounded by a vibrant Ponderosa pine forest, a place of peace and solitude, yet full of power and promise. Days are warm and pleasant; nights are cool, with precipitation often throughout the summer.  The stupa is accessible via a well-maintained and easily drivable dirt road, Zuni Canyon Road; the last part of the drive, the turnoff onto what is known as Bad Road into the retreat land, is short, but travelers should note that if the weather is stormy, the road may be rutted and extremely muddy, so care should be exercised.

The nearest airport is Albuquerque, seventy miles east of Grants on I-40. If driving from the west, Grants is seventy miles east of Gallup, NM.
You may request a map to the Zuni Mountain Stupa and Retreat Land by contacting Vairotsana Foundation New Mexico. To connect with other community members for travel to and from the Zuni Mountain Stupa, please press here.

Due to severe winter weather conditions at this altitude, the retreat land is open only between May through September.  You may visit at any time during this period, depending on road conditions. Vairotsana Foundation of New Mexico asks that you please do not disturb the neighbors or residents living on the land during your visit. You may
only park in the designated parking area in front of the stupa. Please do not drive around the retreat land.

Retreats & Events are held in the shrine room within the stupa. The facilities at present are simple but very pleasant, and include showering and restroom facilities for retreatants.  Retreatants should be prepared to bring appropriate gear for camping in a designated pine-forest camping area.
Please be mindful of the terrain, the land in the Camping Area is rocky and uneven, please enter at your own risk.  Alternative accommodations include nearby private rooms and a cabin owned by community members, as well as, a local bed & breakfast known as Cimarron Rose (tel: 505-783-4770) located a short distance from the retreat land. There are also various motels in Grants, which is a 40 minute drive. The retreat land has a small sangha kitchen where wholesome and delicious food is served during retreats. There are no telephones and cell-phone reception is limited (Verizon only).  Children must be supervised at all times and pets are not allowed.
